Do You Really Care?

by Marc on December 10, 2008

I was listening to a podcast yesterday where the head of a boutique investment bank said he believed the best investment bankers were the ones that cared the most. Leaving aside the obvious jokes about using “investment banker” and “care” in the same sentence, particularly in the current environment, this made me think… how many industries would this rule NOT apply to?

So my message is simple. While no one factor alone can guarantee success in business, I believe that the company in almost any industry that cares more about their customers/clients than anyone else has a substantial competitive advantage.

Of course, saying you care and truly caring are very different things. I'm sure you say you care… you probably even believe that you care… so try this exercise: can you list three things that your company would do for your clients that almost none of your competitors would do simply because you care more than your competitors? What about just one (big) thing to start with?
